Statement
The most dangerous lies are often built out of facts.
In a moment of global uncertainty and political turmoil, I’ve watched people project their fears, insecurities, and failures onto convenient villains, taking fragments of truth and rearranging them until hatred begins to feel rational. We see it increasingly from influential commentators and self-styled truth-tellers who turn insinuation into investigation, giving old prejudices the language and appearance of journalism. As a Jewish filmmaker, I am deeply aware of how this mechanism has fueled antisemitism, but I didn’t want to make a film that lectures its audience. I wanted Conspiracy Theory to capture the seduction of a conspiracy taking shape - how fear becomes evidence, evidence becomes certainty, and certainty becomes permission to hate.

About Andrew Balcof
Andrew Balcof is a writer/director whose work explores the stories people construct to make sense of their place in the world. His latest short film, Conspiracy Theory, examines how selective facts, suspicion, and confirmation bias can harden into something far more dangerous. Balcof is also the director of the feature documentary Wayumi, which received a Special Mention from the Jury at DOC NYC, and the feature horror film, Angels of Mercy. Across fiction and nonfiction, his work uses genre, tension, and dark humor to examine identity, bias, and the narratives we choose to believe.
